The 2025 WNBA Draft took place on Monday in Manhattan, New York. There was one Canadian selected. In the third round, 33rd overall, the Indiana Fever selected forward Yvonne Ejim of Calgary, Alberta.
Ejim played the last five seasons with the Gonzaga Bulldogs of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the United States. This past season she averaged 20.7 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, 1.3 steals per game, and one block per game. Ejim had a field goal percentage of .531, three point percentage of .255 and a free throw percentage of .784. Ejim led the West Coast Conference in points per game and rebounds per game.
Over the last two years, Ejim was the WCC Player of the Year and WCC Defensive Player of the Year. Her older brother Melvin, a native of Toronto, Ontario, played with Iowa State for four seasons from 2011 to 2014.
While growing up, Ejim excelled in tennis, athletics and volleyball. She attended Edge School just outside of Calgary. Ejim is expected to be an extremely important player in the Canadian women’s basketball program for years to come. What the Canadians need at the moment is offense. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Canada only had two points in a single quarter against France. Ejim only played three minutes and 15 seconds against Nigeria in the entire Olympic tournament. Based on how inept the Canadian offense was during the tournament, expect her minutes to significantly rise in international play.
